The country of Croatia shown by Haiga from Croatian authors
Every week we present one haiga by a Croatian author/authors. You are welcome to send three of your unpublished photo-haiga, size 2000 pixels on the longer side of your photograph to the Editor: dvrozic@gmail.com
On your haiga please note the name of the author/authors. Please write the Haiku in Croatian and in your e-mail message you may give the Editor its version in English. Also, in several sentences please let us know how this particular haiga was created.
About haiga
A photo-haiga consists of two art forms, haiku and a photograph. It is important for your haiku not to describe the photograph, nor should it create any misunderstanding. Haiku and the photograph should complement each other and depict an atmosphere of sincerity, buoyancy and depth, creating a piece of art which is more valuable than each separate expression. You need to explore reality and move away from the expected poetical clichés. Be original.
In the spirit of sume-e painting, let your haiku and photography be free of any redundancy. Empty space is important. Explore and take several photographs of the item of your interest until you achieve something especially good. Let your choice of photograph speak of poetry. Take care about choosing the font with which you will write the haiku concerning your photograph. Try several different fonts until you have no obtrusive connection of the letters (shape, colour and size) with the photograph and mood of your art work.
In your haiku do not be a slave to the form of 5-7-5 syllables at the expense of the literary quality of the poem, avoid adjectives. Remember, kigo impersonates the transience of everything and denotes constant changes of everything alive. Only one kigo is allowed in your haiku. Be short and clear, use simple words understandable to each average educated reader. Unfamiliar words may be wrongly interpreted and draw the attention away from such a short poem. While your reader looks up a word in a dictionary, your haiku has lost his/her attention. Remember, haiku is complementary with our rushed, everyday lives. It is clear and short and may be read on sight. It of course hides a story to be thought about.
Try to connect your poem with the photograph in the best possible way. Create several haiga and edit them until you attain the best results. Take care about the main postulates in fine arts. Lay …

THE RESULTS OF A LITTLE IRIS HAIKU CONTEST, CROATIA 2020
JUDGE’S REPORT
By Neal Whitman, CA, USA
In the midst of the pandemic, it was a dose of medicine to read 323 haiku submitted by 114 poets from 27 countries. Reading haiku always lifts my spirits, even those which bring me a feeling of sorrow, as well as joy, because of the creativity that goes into the art of concision. This year’s contest was based on the United Nations theme of strengthening actions for Nature to achieve sustainable goals. It was uplifting to see that haiku poets around the world were “reading” Nature’s warning signals that we need to take action and to learn of the many ways they “see” how Nature can be the solution and how we can help it be so.
1st prize: Eduard Tara, Romania
all these trees
he planted years ago
new whispering leaves
The substance of this haiku directly addresses the contest theme. Trees, of course, absorb carbon dioxide as they grow, so these trees planted in the past were an investment in our future. The person who planted these trees must have had faith and patience that some day they would help future generations. This person may or may not still be alive, but his trees are. Maybe that is what the leaves are whispering. I found this haiku refreshing to recite out loud. It is lyrical in sound and balanced in sight.
2nd prize: Karin Hedetniemi, Canada
woodpecker tapping —
the steady click of
knitting needles
Woodpeckers are natural helpers! They eat wood-boring insects and insect larvae which are harmful to tree health. A bonus is the grin their tap, tap, tapping brings to those of us nearby. What drew me to this haiku was the second audio image. I can hear the click, click, clicking of a knitter working on a home-made garment which means one less factory-made one. It might be a sweater or a scarf or a blanket. I can “see” the knitter’s focused attention and wearing a smile, thinking of someone who will be warmed by this labor of love. It might even be a gift. I much liked the repeat k sound of click and the repeat of the n sound with knitting needles.

*****
The challenge of writing to a contest topic is often not simple, and, given that one’s entries are certain to be compared with many others in the same vein, a premium is placed on finding originality of approach and expression. Inevitably many poets arrive at the same place, and so here there was a plethora of poems illustrating the impossibility of communicating in any language, or else the similitude that exists between all of them. Our winners managed to rise above these compelling but obvious truths by showing the specifics through which our efforts to talk with one another, parallel with our contemporaries or vertically with our ancestors and progeny, met with success or failure.
Certain kinds of poems were inevitable with this topic. For example, several poets treated language as a mutually irreconcilable obstacle
nodding the shared misunderstanding
[Kristyn Blessing, Wisconsin, USA]
often with humorous overtones
after a vodka
I suddenly speak
very well Russian
[Cezar Florin Ciobica, Romania ]
Similarly, many treated language as a lost signifier, either forever gone
funeral
with him they bury
his whole culture
[Tomislav Sjekloća, Montenegro]
or the provenance of the few, tenuously retained
dad tells us
what the talking drum says —
new yam festival
[Anthony Itopa Obaro, Nigeria]
For some, the “old tongue” is an exercise rich in nostalgia (this slightly edited)
star-filled skies . . .
mother sings a lullaby
in Noongar
[Vanessa Proctor, Australia]
and for some it goes beyond the verbal
Native rug —
the language
of several generations
[Zornitza Harizanova, Bulgaria ]
My top winners also created something more, and it is in this something more that the highest art is achieved — going beyond the topic and connecting it with other aspects of the human condition. It was difficult to “rank” these, and I think they should be treated as co-equal, even though a number is being assigned to …
